Fidel Castro, the Cuban revolutionary leader who built a communist state on the doorstep of the United States and for five decades defied U.S. efforts to topple him, died on Friday, his younger brother announced to the nation. He was 90.A towering figure of the second half of the 20th Century, Castro had been in poor health since an intestinal ailment nearly killed him in 2006. He formally ceded power to his younger brother two years later.Wearing a green military uniform, Cuba’s President Raul Castro appeared on state television to announce his brother’s death.

ASUU ends strike
TheAcademic Staff Union of Universitieson Tuesday confirmed that it had ended its one week nationwide warning strike over the non-implementation of its 2009 agreement with the Federal Government.The President ofASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, who said this in Abuja, urged lecturers to return back to their classrooms.“We are making progress especiallywith the intervention of the Senate and in the next one or two meetings,if we are able to get a clear path to the matter, we will avoid the elongation of the strike.“I have been receiving these reportsthatASUUsays strike continues, no,the strike ends today (Tuesday). All lecturers are to go back to work on Wednesday morning.”Ogunyemi said ASUU was hopeful of a positive outcome going by the response coming from the Federal Government.

Timothy Anjembe returns to NPFL from Vietnam
One-time NPFL goal king, Timothy Anjembe has returned to the league after a seven-year stint in Vietnam after he agreed terms with FC IfeanyiUbah.
He is presently training with the Nnewi club ahead of the new season.
The 29-year-old striker was top scorer of the NPFL in 2005 with Lobi Stars.
Anjembe has been in Vietnam since 2009.
