Nigerians in diaspora to pay £30 for BVN registration –NIBSS

Following the extension of the deadline for Bank Verification Number (BVN) registration, customers of Nigerian banks living abroad, who are yet to get their BVN, will have to cough out £30 for the exercise between now and October. This  was made known by the Managing Director and Chief Executive of the Nigeria Inter Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), Mr. Ade Shonubi, during an interactive session with journalists at the weekend. Shonubi stated that the amount, which translates to N11,000, would be the cost of service being paid to OSI services, a consulting company to the Nigerian ministry of External Affairs that is collating data for BVN on behalf of NIBSS and Nigerian banks. He explained that due to the laws in some countries such as the United Kingdom, which bars taking of data of its citizens outside the country, it had engaged OSI, which currently takes data for the Nigerian government for the purpose of passport renewal. Although the deadline for the BVN registration had been moved to October 31, 2015 to allow Nigerians in diaspora register, Shonubi said NIBSS contract with OSI Services extends till the end of the year. He, however, noted that Nigerian banks’ customers who wish to register will have to book an appointment with OSI. He noted that this had become necessary after the London Metropolitan Police had intervened after long queues at the OSI office disrupted traffic. He also revealed that two banks, Diamond and Ecobank have been given the go-ahead to set up desks at their affiliate banks outside the country to gather data. Shonubi noted that Ecobank will be gathering data in the West African region while Diamond Bank will collate data from itsaffiliates.

Iheanacho on target for City

Record-signing Raheem Sterling swooped on a defence-splitting pass from Kelechi Iheanacho to score his debut goal just over two minutes as Manchester City downed AS Roma on penalties in the International Champions Cup in Melbourne, Australia on Tuesday,AFPreports. The Italians equalised just five minutes after Sterling’s strike in spectacular fashion. Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic let fly with a 20-metre thunderbolt into the top right corner. But Iheanacho put Manchester City ahead again on 51 minutes when he zeroed in on an awful back pass by former England international Ashley Cole to coolly beat De Sanctis from close range. But Serbian Adem Ljajic threw the Italians a lifeline when he beat Joe Hart with his free-kick over the wall inthe 87th minute to send the match into penalties.England goalkeeper Joe Hart made two late saves as Manchester City won 5-4 after the penalty shootout at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

72 Battalion lost 28 soldiers to Boko Haram, others

The Commanding Officer, 72 Special Forces
Battalion, Makurdi, Timothy Lagbaja, has said
that the battalion lost 28 soldiers to
insurgency in the North-East and in Benue.
Mr. Lagbaja, a colonel, told newsmen in
Makurdi on Wednesday that between 2012
and 2015, the battalion lost four officers and
eight soldiers to the Tiv/Fulani and Agatu
crises in Benue.
He said the remaining 16 were lost to
insurgency in the North-East, while many
others who sustained degrees of injuries were
either flown abroad or treated in the country.
The commander said the battalion alone had
deployed about 500 soldiers to serve in the
special security outfit `operation Zenda’ to
maintain internal security in the state.
According to him, the effort is paying off as
weapons hitherto in the hands of wrong
people have been recovered.
He said that the high criminality in the state
had been reduced to “few isolated cases of
killings’’.

Oliseh officially unveiled as Eagles coach

The former Super Eagles captain has been
presented to the public as its new coach in
Abuja, two weeks after another former captain
Stephen Keshi was sacked
Sunday Oliseh has been unveiled by the
Nigeria Football Federation, replacing sacked
Stephen Keshi, as coach of the Super Eagles.
The 40-year-old was the overwhelming
favourite to be handed the role after the ‘Big
Boss’ was shown the exit door by the NFF two
weeks ago.
And on Wednesday, Oliseh finally signed a
contract with the NFF which ties him to the
Super Eagles until 2020, becoming the fifth
player in the 1994 class to handle the senior
national team after Austin Eguavoen, Samson
Siasia, Daniel Amokachi and Keshi.
"It's a great honour to be coach of this great
nation,” said Oliseh at the unveiling ceremony
in Abuja.
"I'm not coming as a messiah. I'm coming as
a man who wants to serve his country and
give 150%.
"Gone are the days when we had individual
players who can win games on their own. But
we have potential," he said.
He also laid down the law to players of
Nigerian origin on his requirements before
they can feature for his team.
"No player outside of first division in Nigeria
or elsewhere will play for the Super Eagles. We
will work together with the technical
committee because if we fail, they fail,” he
concluded.
The ex-Nigeria international will now hope to
inspire an immediate improvement in the
Eagles’ fortunes, starting with a win against
Tanzania in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier
in September.

controversy which forced his media team to
make clarifications that further provoked
critical reactions from Nigerians, on Tuesday.
Saraki, in his tweet, said that President
Muhammadu Buhari did not require the
approval of the Senate to nominate the
country’s service chiefs.
He specifically said it was not the business of
the Senate to approve the appointment of

Man disappears over wife’s third set of twins

Where is Citizen Emeka Benjamin Uche, a
Lagos factory worker?
That was the big question yesterday as his
wife, Ruth, 34, from Abia State broke the news
of his disappearance since February.
Uche, 39, fled home when he learnt that his
expectant wife was carrying a set of twins –
the family’s third.
Mrs Uche was at the Lagos State Secretariat,
Alausa yesterday with her six children,
pleading for help.
Not many knew what she wanted as she stood
under a tree, close to the Press Centre,
carrying the babies. Her first two sets of twins,
much older, stood close to their mother, and
did not in any way seem intimidated by the
sea of cameras and faces focusing on them.
In 2009 when she first conceived, she was
delivered of two girls – Goodness and
Godnews. The second conception, two years
later, produced another two – a boy and a
girl, named John and Joyce.
But when her husband, Emeka, learnt that the
third pregnancy was another set of two he fled
their number 32, Awori Street, Agege home on
the outskirt of Lagos to an undisclosed
location in Ikorodu, Lagos.
